ROCK HILL, S.C. — A newly established Global Ambassador Scholarship at Winthrop University will allow recipients to grow their leadership skills and provide opportunities to engage with global issues.

The Winthrop Global Ambassador Scholarship is available for out-of-state students and includes a half-tuition scholarship, renewable for four years, and $1,000 toward a life-changing, study abroad experience.

“This scholarship is a good fit for students who have an interest in international service, the arts, education, or business; who welcome the challenge and opportunity of studying abroad; and who are excited to participate in a highly individualized study experience,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Debra Boyd. “An added benefit is that we know employers value a global perspective when hiring. College graduates with international experiences top applicant pools in many fields.”

This latest scholarship complements a five-year Global Learning Initiative that Winthrop debuted in 2011. The initiative infuses global components into required courses for freshmen, and it strives to improve students’ learning in three areas: global knowledge, global attitudes, and global engagement. The Global Ambassador Scholarship will bring students to Winthrop from a variety of areas around the country and allow the students to access Winthrop’s high quality programs, one of President Jayne Marie (Jamie) Comstock’s goals for the university. The program will provide recipients the opportunity to expand their global understanding and will give them a solid foundation to make a difference in the world.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must qualify as an out-of-state student; meet admission standards for the university and academic standards for the scholarship; and be interested in leadership roles and a customizable education program. All majors are welcome. Applications are due by Feb. 14, 2014. Recipients will be notified the week of March 3, 2014.

To apply, students should complete the scholarship application.
