Department of Music Hosts Special Guitar Ensemble Festival and Benedetto Guitar Day

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Winthrop University’s Department of Music will host a special Guitar Ensemble Festival and Benedetto Guitar Day on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Conservatory of Music. All guitar enthusiasts, from amateurs to experts, are welcome to attend the free event.

The day will be filled with workshops, exhibitors and performances, beginning with registration at 9:30 a.m.

Workshops include:

“Bb Blues Chord Voicings” with Associate Professor of Music L.H. Dickert, who teaches guitar, jazz history and theory at Winthrop, and also directs the guitar ensembles and jazz combos. 10 a.m., 120 Conservatory of Music.

“The Art of the Jazz Guitar Duo” with Jerry Sims and Howard Paul. Sims is a renowned 7-string guitarist who founded Sims Music and has 30 years of teaching experience. He is regularly seen in Just Jazz Guitar Magazine. Paul is the CEO of Benedetto Guitars and has led his trios and quartets, performing in Savannah’s annual jazz and music festivals. 11 a.m., 120 Conservatory of Music.

• Master class with Howard Paul, Dwight Spencer of Benedetto Guitars and Tom Hildreth, an adjunct professor of music at Winthrop. 4:45 p.m. in 120 CMUS.

An evening concert by Howard Paul and others in Frances May Barnes Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. will cap off the day.
