ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop Campus Police Officer Thomas Dunham has earned his second award for the year for his work as an Alive at 25 instructor.

This month he was selected as the 2013 South Carolina Alive at 25 Instructor of the Year by the S.C. National Safety Council. In June, the Central City Optimist Club picked Dunham as its choice for Officer of the Year for his commitment and participation to the teen defensive driving program.

Alive at 25 is a survival course developed by the National Safety Council to prevent automobile crashes by teenagers. Taught by off-duty police officers, the course is delivered in a 4.5-hour program to high schools to help young drivers focus on behaviors, decision-making and risks. The course bridges the gap between what teens learn in driver’s education and what behaviors and skills they need to become responsible, crash-free drivers.

Alive at 25 instructors go through a strict screening process and 3.5 days of intensive training, said Winthrop Police Chief Frank Zebedis. Dunham has been an Alive at 25 instructor for six years and has conducted more than 100 classes. He has advanced in the program and now monitors new instructors to help prepare them to teach the course. Currently, there are more than 200 Alive at 25 instructors in South Carolina.

Dunham, who has 10 years of law enforcement experience at Winthrop and the Tega Cay Police Department, will be honored on Nov. 7 during the S.C. National Safety Council banquet in Columbia, S.C.
