ROCK HILL, S.C. – Ruth M. Fujino, a senior mathematics major at Winthrop University, was presented the Waldemar J. Trjitzinksy Scholarship from the American Mathematical Society on Oct. 10.

Fujino received the $3,000 scholarship check from Tom Polaski, chair of the Department of Mathematics at Winthrop. The scholarship is one of eight awarded nationwide each year by the society to assist talented students with their mathematics studies.

“The American Mathematical Society selected our department to offer a Trjitzinsky Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year,” Polaski said. “From our pool of excellent majors, we chose Ruth to receive this award.”

Fujino grew up in Japan where she attended high school but now lives in Gurnee, Ill. The daughter of missionaries, she aspires to work abroad herself after graduation.

She said: “I am majoring in mathematics simply because I love the subject and realize the versatility of this degree – the foundational thinking and problem-solving skills it provides apply to so many aspects of life.”
