Education Professor Will Teach Eastern European Teachers About Online Learning

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop University Education Professor Marshall Jones will travel to Kyiv, Ukraine Oct. 2 to lead workshops for university administrators from eastern Europe on preparing for online learning at their institutions.

More than 20 university administrators from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia will participate in the leadership development programs sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation.

Jones will attend at the request of the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), the non-profit organization that works with the U.S. State Department on education initiatives. His sessions will deal with Open Educational Resources, Massive Open Online Courses and how educators can incorporate them into their institutions. He also will be working with educators on strategies for planning for the implementation of small- and large-scale innovations at their universities.

Jones also will be attending the Oct. 5-6 leadership conference. He plans to blog and tweet about the trip (@marshallgjones).

In 2012, Jones spent time in the Philippines on a similar mission for classroom teachers.

Jones joined the Winthrop faculty in 2001 to develop a master's program in instructional technology. In 2009 he became the director of graduate studies for the Richard W. Riley College of Education. His research interests include the diffusion and adoption of innovations, emerging technologies and their impact on learning, internet-based learning, social networking and instructional strategies for face-to-face and online classes.
