ROCK HILL, S.C. — A chance encounter at a conference in California during the summer has led to a speaking gig for a Winthrop University student.

Senior jewelry major Chris Smalls will be a featured speaker on Sept. 17 at Ignite Charlotte, a community-driven presentation that brings together experts involved in the arts, technology, education, the government and more. The initiative is led by Bridget Sullivan, Ignite’s executive producer and founder.

“I met Bridget at a digital arts conference called SIGGRAPH that I attended with my professor Courtney Starrett in California over the summer,” Smalls explained. “My talk at Ignite Charlotte will be on Rapid Prototyping in Jewelry focusing on Selective Laser Sintering with Nylon.”

All people who are interested in speaking at Ignite events must submit a presentation idea, including a description and three audience takeaways. Smalls was selected as one of 16 speakers for the newest event.

Ignite Charlotte’s format is quick: each speaker has five minutes to enlighten the audience, using only 20 slides that advance every 15 seconds.

Ignite Charlotte will take place Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 6-9 p.m. at the Neighborhood Theater, located at 511 E. 36th St. in Charlotte. Tickets are $5 and can be bought online or at the door.
