ROCK HILL, S.C. — What’s one more mile for Winthrop University’s Frank Rizzo?

On Sept. 7 at 7 a.m., Rizzo will lead cyclists on an 82-mile ride throughout York County to commemorate his 82nd birthday. Proceeds from the ride will support the Student Veterans of Winthrop and then to the Wounded Warrior Project.

In 2006, Rizzo, a staff member in the Office of Student Activities, joked with his bike-riding buddy George Davis that as he approached his 75th birthday, he wanted to bike 75 miles. They put together a riding group.

Every year since then, Rizzo has led a team of cyclists on a journey of miles corresponding with his age. This year's ride is sponsored by the student veterans group on campus and the Rock Hill Bicycle Club. Rizzo, who works at the information desk at the DiGiorgio Campus Center, is veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Cyclists should meet at The Shack near the Winthrop Lake at 7 a.m. They are expected to return at 2:30 p.m.

To ride, fill out a registration form, found in the DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby and indicate your T-shirt size. The cost is $35 for adult riders and $10 for students. T-shirts are not included in the student price.

Non-riders can also buy a T-shirt for a $20 donation.
