Rock the Hill - Rock the Globe Will Help Foster Eagle Pride

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The inaugural “Rock the Hill—Rock the Globe” event on Saturday, Aug. 17 will mark the first time Winthrop’s incoming class will gather together to celebrate becoming an Eagle.

Men’s Basketball Coach Pat Kelsey will serve as emcee as students will be introduced to Winthrop’s athletes, learn chants for athletic events and leave filled with Eagle pride.

The event stems from a partnership between University College programs, particularly the Global Learning Initiative and the first-year student class (ACAD 101), and Winthrop Athletics.

“We eagerly anticipate the arrival of our new students,” said Leah Kendall, Winthrop’s director of ACAD, “Rock the Hill—Rock the Globe” introduces our incoming class to the Global Learning Initiative, their academic experience with ACAD, and the spirit and pride associated with being Winthrop Eagles. ”

Freshmen will begin arriving around 2 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum and will be greeted by athletic teams along the Coliseum Concourse. The rally starts at 3 p.m., and President Jayne Marie (Jamie) Comstock will conclude the hour-long event with a message to students.

From 4 to 5 p.m. freshmen will gather with their individual ACAD classes and peer mentors in designated areas around the Coliseum where they will discuss the Global Learning Initiative and review the upcoming Welcome Week schedule.

Winthrop’s new students moved in to their residence halls on Friday, Aug. 16. The annual Convocation ceremony to open the school year will be held Monday, Aug. 19 and classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 20.
