ROCK HILL, S.C. - The late Anna Marie Hurst ’12 discovered her life’s passion early: She loved working with children. To honor her legacy of compassion and support future teachers, Anna’s family has established the Anna Marie Hurst Memorial Scholarship.

Established in summer 2013, the scholarship offers financial assistance to Winthrop students majoring in elementary education, early childhood education, or family and consumer sciences, with first preference given to students from South Carolina and members of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

Born and raised in Rock Hill, Anna was a graduate of Northwestern High School, where she was a cheerleader. During her years at Winthrop, she earned her B.S. in family and consumer sciences and was active with Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Anna also worked at Carolina Kids Child Development Center in Rock Hill and worked independently as a babysitter – jobs that allowed her to “touch many people’s lives,” according to her mother, Melanie Myers Hurst.

Hurst said she felt the Anna Marie Hurst Memorial Scholarship was a fitting way both to honor her daughter’s memory and help future teachers “get the experience and the education that Anna received at Winthrop.”

“I couldn’t think of a better way to honor Anna than to help someone else walk in her footsteps and succeed after graduation,” said Hurst.

Anna’s aunt, Rebecca Myers, remembered her niece as a young woman who was full of life and had a special gift for helping children. Myers added that she believes the Anna Marie Hurst Memorial Scholarship “is exactly what Anna would want.”

“We’re so pleased to be able to offer a scholarship. Anna always helped other people, especially children, and this scholarship will help continue the life’s work that she didn’t get to finish,” said Myers.
