ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop University has received a $75,000 grant from the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation to enrich and enhance two programs housed in University College.

The programming and work of University College facilitates the Winthrop community’s commitment to lifelong learning, leadership and service.

The grant will provide additional funding for the Learning Excellent Academic Practices (L.E.A.P.) program, which identifies and provides support to students in their freshman year. In addition, it will allow for an academic liaison role for the Academic Success Center, which provides support for students across the curriculum through peer tutors.

Through this special funding from foundation, Winthrop will be able to continue crucial support to students, ensuring their achievement in the classroom and providing further foundation for overall degree attainment.

Gloria Jones, dean of Winthrop’s University College, commented on the gift, noting that, “The funding from the Sisters of Mercy will allow us to continue a mutually beneficial trial program that we initiated last year of using successful LEAP students as mentors and tutors for former LEAP students who need additional support. The experience that the mentors receive makes them stronger students also.

"Our hope is that these students will transition to become tutors in the Academic Success Center, a support service that is open to all students and provides tutoring in a variety of foundational courses.”
