ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop Board of Trustees honored outgoing President Anthony DiGiorgio on April 12 with the creation of a DiGiorgio Forum on Leadership and the title of President Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Public Service and Leadership.

Both received unanimous votes during the board’s quarterly board meeting, held at the DiGiorgio Campus Center.

The purpose of the DiGiorgio Forum will be to help students, faculty, staff and others become effective and ethical leaders by providing professional development workshops, one-on-one mentoring and other programs to enhance leadership skills. It will connect an array of leadership-related initiatives at Winthrop and connect more broadly with similar initiatives beyond the campus.

Board Chairman Dalton Floyd said the institution will honor DiGiorgio, who is stepping down this summer as president after 24 years, for his many contributions as an educational and community leader. DiGiorgio, Winthrop’s ninth president, is one of the longest serving public university presidents in the country.

The Division of Academic Affairs will create the forum to serve as a focal point and gathering place for leadership development.

“I am touched by this gesture,” DiGiorgio said of the creation of the initiative bearing his name. “I have had a deep abiding interest in leadership for the past four decades. I look forward to giving life to this forum so it can be another anchor of sorts, similar to our West Forum.”

Board members also conferred on the president’s wife, Gale, the title of First Lady Emeritus, and thanked her for dedicated volunteerism, civic leadership and personal warmth.

“The Trustees of Winthrop University shall remain eternally grateful for the lasting transformative impact of Anthony J. and Gale N. DiGiorgio on Winthrop University,” the president emeritus resolution read.
