ROCK HILL, S.C. — Winthrop University students elected juniors Chris Aubrie and Ian Deas as president and vice-president, respectively, of the Council of Student Leaders (CSL) for the 2013-14 school year.

Aubrie, of Bennettsville, S.C., is an international business major with a minor in international studies who wants to help first-generation university students and foreign exchange students with encouragement and success. Though he is originally from Connecticut, he lived in China for three years.

Aubrie previously served as vice-president of CSL with outgoing president Kambrell Garvin and as chair of the Student Empowerment Committee. He is involved with several other campus organizations: Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), the TRiO SSS Leadership Council and the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Deas, of Charleston, S.C., is pursuing a biology degree with a minor in chemistry. He has held leadership roles in The Gentlemen’s League and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity tutored at the Academic Success Center and was an Eagle STEM Scholar. He served as co-chair of the Public Relations Committee for CSL as well as a representative for the Student Allocations Committee.

Off-campus, he has volunteered through Adopt-A-Highway, Rolling in Rock Hill and the Boyd Hill Community Center S.C.O.P.E.

In their platforms, the two focused on objectives such as pushing healthier meal options for on-campus students, promoting more involvement with CSL and increasing attendance at Winthrop athletic events.

About 800 students voted, representing a 16 percent turnout.
