Mother-Daughter Pair Highlights New Friends of Dacus Library Book Talk

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Mothers, daughters and book enthusiasts will have a chance to bond at a Winthrop University Friends of Dacus Library-sponsored book talk by mother-and-daughter team M.H. and Bela Herlong on April 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Dinkins Auditorium.

The featured authors will discuss their writing careers and various books, followed by a book signing. The event is free and open to the public.

Bela Herlong ’51, is a former educator with a bachelor’s from Winthrop, and master’s and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. A life-long Saluda County resident and educator, Herlong received the Governor’s Humanities Award in 2009, recognizing “outstanding achievement in the humanities.”

She has written, produced and directed historical dramas about Saluda County and wrote “Breaking New Ground: A Pictorial History of Saluda County,”“Padgett’s My Name” and co-authored the three-volume set “Where Our Paths Crossed: the Old Edgefield District Settlement of Mount Willing.”

Daughter Madaline H. Herlong is a juvenile fiction author who lives in New Orleans. She holds degrees from the College of William and Mary and both a master’s and law degree from the University of Virginia. Her novel “The Great Wide Sea” was named one of the 2010 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults by the Young Adult Library Services Association. Her second novel, “Buddy,” tells the story of a boy who sets out to find his dog Buddy after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
