ROCK HILL, S.C. — Boyd Jones, director of university programs at Winthrop University, can add another feather to his cap: the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the association’s conference this past weekend.
APCA presents the award to those who have distinguished themselves in the campus programming field. The organization already has an award named after Jones. During the presentation, Nancy Oeswein, president of Auburn Moon Agency, reflected on the impact Jones has had on her. She couldn’t think of all the words she wanted to say about Jones’ impact on the industry, she reflected in her blog post.
Instead, she showed a picture collage of Jones while Dolly Parton, one of Jones’ favorite artists, played in the background. She then played “For Good,” Jones’ favorite Broadway song from the musical “Wicked.”
The standing ovation that followed was “surreal,” Jones said.
“I kept thinking, is this really happening?” he said. “I was so nervous but hoped I conveyed in my remarks that what is important is people, not money, but relationships and how we all treat each other.”
Jones added that he’s lucky to have worked with so many wonderful people throughout the years, especially students.
Jones, who has worked at Winthrop for more than 20 years and also served 11 years at the University of Tulsa, oversees Winthrop’s DiGiorgio Student Union (DSU) which provides quality on-campus programming to educate and entertain members of the Winthrop community and the public.
Vice President for Student Life Frank Ardaiolo said Jones has given so much to students and Winthrop for so long because of his extraordinary professionalism and commitment.
"We’re so proud of him and this richly deserved recognition with the national affirmation that Winthrop has the best student activities professional in the entire USA," he said.
“Boyd Jones is a true veteran in the Campus Programming field and has touched many individuals with his energetic demeanor, high fives and 'You rocks!'" said Deborah Strahorn, assistant director of university programming. "It is no surprise that he has been recognized as a life-time achiever by two national associations within the last two years. Boyd is sure to brighten up a room when he walks in, and has impacted hundreds of students over the years."
Under Jones’ leadership, DSU has consistently been selected by Campus Activities Magazine readers as one of the nation's best school program boards. DSU won Campus Program of the Year in 1995, 2002 and 2004. The organization won similar awards from the National Association of Campus Activities and the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities.
In 2012-13 DSU has brought to campus former American Idol contestant Bo Bice, singer-songwriters such as Hana Pestle and Ari Hest, breakdancing roller-skaters BreakSk8 and hypnotist Tom DeLuca, a Winthrop favorite. In 2012, Jones received the National Association for Campus Activities’ (NACA) Founders Award.
