ROCK HILL, S.C. - Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, so why not gift something precious?

The Winthrop University GEM (Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths) Annual Valentine’s Jewelry Sale may be your source for handcrafted elegance.

The Jewelry and Metals program and GEM (Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths student organization) will host the sixth annual Valentine’s Jewelry Sale on Friday, Feb. 8. A portion of the proceeds will help fund an upcoming public programming to raise awareness about the ethical sourcing of materials in jewelry and the visual arts later in February.

Students, faculty and alumni of Winthrop’s jewelry and metals program, as well as members of GEM, have been handcrafting brilliant jewelry objects for the event. Jewelry for both men and women will be on sale, with prices starting at just $5.

The noon to 5 p.m. sale on Feb. 8 will take place in the DiGiorgio Center Room 114.

In addition to the sale, the Jewelry and Metals program is seeking donations of old unwanted jewelry for the community jewelry mining project happening in Rock Hill, S.C. this February.

“Those tangled chains, unmatched earrings and banged up bracelets sitting at the bottom of jewelry boxes around the Rock Hill area are exactly what we want,” said Courtney Starrett, associate professor of fine arts. “The jewelry artists participating in Radical Jewelry Makeover – Rock Hill want to get their creative hands on donations of old silver or gold jewelry.”

There will be a drop box for donations for this project at the sale.
