Math Students Selected to Attend Field of Dreams Conference in Arizona

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Two Winthrop University students have been selected from hundreds of students nation-wide to attend a conference geared toward mathematics this month.

Johnakin Martin and Hannah Swan have been chosen to attend the Field of Dreams Conference in Phoenix, Ariz. Sponsored by the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in Mathematical Sciences, the conference connects promising mathematics students from across the country with graduate schools and leading employers in quantitative fields. The conference will run from Nov. 2-4 at Arizona State University.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Joe Rusinko learned about the program at a conference over the summer and encouraged the students to apply.

Martin, of Simpsonville, S.C., and Swan, of Fort Mill, both mathematics majors, are two of approximately 100 students chosen to participate in the conference. Martin was a 2011 Winthrop Initiative for STEM Educators (WISE) Scholar. Swan is a McNair Scholar.

The goal of the alliance is to ensure that anyone who wants to pursue a doctoral degree in the math sciences is given the tools and encouragement to succeed.
