ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Rock Hill Rotary Club named Winthrop President Anthony DiGiorgio a Paul Harris Fellow at its Sept. 27 luncheon meeting.

Member Ronnie Faulkner, head of technical services at Winthrop’s Dacus Library, nominated DiGiorgio for the award because of the president’s achievements as an educator for 50 years. “His contributions to Winthrop University and to Rock Hill will have spanned an impressive 24 years at the time of his planned 2013 retirement as president,” Faulkner wrote. “One need only walk across the campus to see the impressive development that has characterized his tenure as president.”

At the same time, Faulkner continued, DiGiorgio has worked with the local community to develop the area around Winthrop University. He has not only led a high-quality institution, but has been a leader in higher education in South Carolina, the South and the nation.

Rotarians designate each other and members of the community as Paul Harris Fellows to recognize people whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of the Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. DiGiorgio is a past member of Rotary.

The Rock Hill Rotary Club is one of the oldest Rotary Clubs in the country. Rotary was founded in 1905 as the world’s first volunteer service organization, while the Rock Hill Rotary Club was formed in 1919.
