Sixth Annual Family Day Will Attract Hundreds of Visitors to Campus

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Family Day bundles plenty of activities for Winthrop students to enjoy with their parents on Saturday, Sept. 29.

More than 600 family members are expected to visit their students during this sixth annual event, according to Carrie Whiteside, program director for New Student and Parent Programs.

Family Day will begin with a breakfast and welcome from Debra Boyd, vice president for academic affairs, followed by various breakout sessions presented by Winthrop faculty and staff. The sessions cover improvisational theatre, Greek Life, study abroad, career development, modern day heroes and the Common Book.

The day continues with the Family Picnic, held on the Byrnes Auditorium lawn, featuring a performance by the Symphonic Band. Beginning at noon, the band will play compositions reminiscent of community and professional band concerts of the early 1900s, including works by such popular composers as Leonard Bernstein, John Williams and John Phillip Sousa, as well as by faculty member Mark Lewis and his stirring rendition of "Casey at the Bat."

The afternoon activities include the annual Family Olympics, the RSA Block Party with inflatable games, a women’s lacrosse game, and the annual Disc Golf Tournament. Evening activities include a performance by Breath of Soul a cappella group, presented by the DiGiorgio Student Union, and the classic Disney movie, Toy Story, shown under the stars at the Winthrop Amphitheatre.
