ROCK HILL, S.C. - Cate Edwards, who participated in two presidential elections as the daughter of Democratic Party candidate John Edwards, will speak at Winthrop on Sept. 18 about her political experiences.

With the recently concluded Republican and Democratic conventions, and the presidential election less than two months away, Cate Edwards will provide the perspective of an adult child of a prominent political figure who participated in part of two presidential campaigns. She also will talk about the creation of a foundation in her late mother's name.

“A Conversation with Cate Edwards” will take place from 11 a.m. to noon in Tillman Auditorium. While Edwards will take questions from students and the public, she will not be giving media interviews.

Here are the highlights of her background:

• The Raleigh, N.C., native is a managing partner with a new public-interest law firm, Advocates for Justice, with offices in New York and Washington.

• A 2009 Harvard Law School graduate, she clerked for a federal judge and worked at a Washington-based firm specializing in civil rights cases.

• She serves as president of the education foundation named for her late mother, Elizabeth Edwards, and has served as its director. The foundation seeks to educate, enrich and empower youth from low-income backgrounds to provide life-changing opportunities.

Edwards is part of Winthrop's speaker series related to the presidential election which began in 2011 with five Republican primary candidates speaking at the university in 2011 and 2012.

Her visit is sponsored by the John C West Forum on Politics and Policy, which has been at Winthrop since 2008. Named for John West, a former S.C. governor and professor, the forum promotes civic engagement among future civic leaders in South Carolina.
