New Gift Doubles Lucia Beason Bell Endowed Scholarship

 The scholarship provides support for students from Chester County, S.C., in memory of Chester, S.C. resident Lucia Beason Bell.
 The scholarship began awarding after its establishment earlier in the academic year; this addition to the scholarship will make it one of the larger scholarships available to Winthrop students.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - An additional $200,000 will add to the already existing Lucia Beason Bell Endowed Scholarship. The gift, given by an anonymous donor, will double the value of the scholarship, which was established early in fall 2011.

The scholarship provides support for students from Chester County, S.C., in memory of Chester, S.C. resident Lucia Beason Bell.

The Lucia Beason Bell Endowed Scholarship provides renewable funds to Winthrop students studying any major who meet the academic requirements. It is available for freshmen and current students. Second preference will be given to students from Fairfield County, S.C., and third preference will be given to students from Camden, Lugoff, and Elgin, S.C.

Bell, originally from Woodruff, S.C., moved to Chester to pursue a teaching career. She married S. Lewis Bell, and they both worked for the Chester Telephone Company, which later became TruVista Communications.

During her tenure there, Bell was a manager, officer and board member. She was also active with the Chester County Library Board, Chester County Historical Society, Chester County Geological Society and the Chester Associate Reformed (ARP) Church.

The scholarship began awarding after its establishment earlier in the academic year; this addition to the scholarship will make it one of the larger scholarships available to Winthrop students.
