Friends of the Conservatory Welcomes Back Louis Shirer ‘80 for Feb. 17 Recital

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop University’s Friends of the Conservatory will host organist Louis Shirer ‘80 for a Feb. 17 recital that will include works by Max Reger, Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Liszt.

Shirer has spent more than 30 years working as a church musician in the Carolinas, New Jersey and New York. He spent 16 years as organist and director of handbells at Eastminster Presbyterian Church and last year was appointed as organist at Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, S.C.

Shirer made his New York orchestral debut with the Nassau Symphony in 1984, and has appeared as soloist with both the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra and the USC Symphony. He has performed solo recitals and accompanied choir tours throughout the United States and Canada.

He holds degrees in organ performance from Winthrop and Westminster Choir College.

In addition to his duties at Washington Street United Methodist Church, Shirer continues to teach courses in music appreciation and music theory at Midlands Technical College.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. recital, to be held in Byrnes Auditorium, are $15 for adults; $10 for Winthrop faculty/staff; and $5 for students with a Winthrop ID.
