Mind Games: Big South Quiz Bowl Set for Jan. 28

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Students from seven universities will compete against each other brain-to-brain Saturday, Jan. 28 during the seventh annual Big South Quiz Bowl Tournament at Winthrop University.

The competition will get underway at 9 a.m. as each college team will face each other during the seven rounds held in Owens Hall. Competing are Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, Radford, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Virginia Military Institute and UNC Asheville.

A winner will be crowned around 3:45 p.m. by Kyle Kallander, Big South commissioner.

Each round consists of two 10-minute halves with questions involving math, classical and modern literature, art, chemistry, biology, popular culture and history topics. Participants earn extra points by answering questions early or by answering the bonus questions.

“This is a fun way to bring the Big South universities together and showcase our campus,” said John Timmons, event organizer, Winthrop coach and assistant director of residence life.

Winthrop team members are: Katie Zanowski (captain), Jessica Creel, Miri Smith, Hampton Ballowe and alternates Jon Hoin and Joshua Dunn. Assistant team coach is Dylan Phillips, a Winthrop graduate student. Other workers helping with the event are Cheryl Hingle and Dana Bruneau.

The Big South and University College at Winthrop are co-sponsoring the event.
