ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Dec. 2-3 Senior Choreography Showcase will feature eight pieces that highlight contemporary ballet, jazz and modern styles of dance.

The Department of Theatre and Dance's fall 2011 showcase includes five pieces choreographed by seniors Everett Johnson of Rock Hill and Rochelle Stone of Cheraw, S.C. In addition, this year’s showcase offers something new as an additional three dances were choreographed by faculty members Mary Beth Young, Meg Schriffen and Mia Cunningham for the Winthrop Dance Repertory Theatre, a group that travels in the spring to perform at local schools, retirement communities and other venues.

The showcase pieces use student as performers and as technical crew members. During the showcase, the students have creative control over their pieces, from selecting a theme to auditioning dancers. A part of the undergraduate major in dance, the production allows students to exercise creative control and prepare for future work in the dance field, said showcase faculty coordinator Meg Schriffen.

“Everett and Rochelle both have worked exceptionally hard creating these pieces. They are normally required to choreograph one piece for this concert and class and they have a combined five pieces which demonstrates their sense of commitment and excitement to the choreographic process,” added Schriffen, who has served as faculty coordinator for the event since 2008.

The Senior Choreography Showcase, which will take place in Johnson Theatre, is part of Rock Hill’s ChristmasVille. Tickets are $8 with Winthrop I.D. and $15 for the general public. Performances are Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
