Homecoming Week Brings Together Alumni and Students to Celebrate Winthrop

 Also Saturday, the highly anticipated National Pan-hellenic Council Homecoming Step Show will begin at 8 p.m. Nov. 12 in Byrnes Auditorium.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - November’s Homecoming/Alumni Reunion Celebration 2011 on Winthrop’s campus will offer a variety of activities for students, alumni and the Winthrop community from Nov. 9-12.

In addition to tailgating on Saturday, students can participate during the week in a student talent show, a lip sync competition, a car smash and a step show.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, the fun starts at 11 a.m. on the south lawn at Winthrop Coliseum as the Lloyd Dobler Effect gives a concert. Alumni are welcome to stop by a booth hosted by the Winthrop Alumni Association – at noon outside the Coliseum for burgers and hot dogs.

At 4 p.m., tailgaters can cheer on the Eagles as they face Eastern Kentucky University. Later Saturday evening, the DiGiorgio Student Union will offer two free showings of “Kung Fu Panda 2” at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Dina’s Place in the DiGiorgio Campus Center.

Also Saturday, the highly anticipated National Pan-hellenic Council Homecoming Step Show will begin at 8 p.m. Nov. 12 in Byrnes Auditorium. Tickets are $7 in advance and $15 at the door.

Wednesday, November 9

Student Talent Show - Kick off the Homecoming week as Winthrop students take the stage and show off their skills at this annual Homecoming favorite. The Homecoming Court finalists will be announced during the Talent Show and voting will begin immediately following the show online. Tillman Auditorium, 8 p.m. Free.

Thursday, November 10

Lip Sync Competition and Pep Rally - Think you can perform like Journey or dance like Usher? Well come out and show off what you got at Winthrop's first annual Lip Sync Competition. Prizes will be awarded to the winning groups. Richardson Ballroom - DiGiorgio Center, 7 p.m. Free. Co-sponsored by Resident Students' Association (RSA), Greek Life, Student Activities, Student Homecoming Committee, Winthrop Athletics and Council of Student Leaders.

Friday, November 11

Remembrance Day National Roll Call Remembering the Sacrifices of Ten Years at War
On Veteran’s Day, 11/11/11, colleges and universities will be participating in The Remembrance Day National Roll Call to honor casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom by performing a synchronized reading of all names. Participants will be reading the names in 15 minute increments from the Hardin Family Garden, Scholars Walk and from the Amphitheater. A ceremony will be held starting at 10:50 a.m. at the Amphitheater to Remember the Sacrifices of the Ten Years at War. Amphitheatre, 10:50 a.m. – noon.

Car Smash and Spirit Gear Creation – Come out and show your school spirit as we smash a car and create spirit gear such as t-shirts, posters, pennants to bring to the game on Saturday. President's Circle (Right outside of Richardson and Wofford Hall), 2:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Student Homecoming Committee, Pi Kappa Phi, and the DiGiorgio Student Union (DSU).

Book signing and Homecoming Party – A book signing session is set for Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Winthrop Bookstore in the DiGiorgio Campus Center, where six alumni and two current students will autograph their published works.

After the book signing, guests can head over to the Homecoming Party at 9 p.m. in Richardson Ballroom, where the classes of 1981, 1986, 1991, 2001 and 2006 will receive milestone gifts. Featuring live music of Winthrop favorite, City of God, caricaturist Bruce Stevenson back by popular demand, Make Your Own Magazine Covers, free food, cash bar and unlimited fun! DiGiorgio Campus Center Ballroom, 9 p.m. Free. Sponsored by the Student Homecoming Committee and the DiGiorgio Student Union (DSU)

Saturday, November 12

Alumni Awards Brunch – This is set for 10 a.m. in McBryde Hall. This year’s award winners, who will be honored at the brunch, are: Vivian Moore Carroll ’73 (Alumni Distinguished Service Award); Dr. Andy Wilson ’96 (Alumni Professional Achievement Award); Meghan Terry ’04, ’06 (Outstanding Young Alumni Award); Laura Manheim Hewitt ’61 (Mary Mildred Sullivan Award); and Karl A. Folkens ’78 (Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award).

Winthrop Men's Basketball Alumni Game - Come watch basketball alums like Pierre Wooten, Eyo Eiffiong and many others from the past as they gather for Homecoming 2011. Coliseum, 1 p.m.

Men's Basketball - Cheer on the Eagles as they take on the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky University. Homecoming Court winners will be announced at half-time. During the game, the winning Homecoming Banner and Float will be announced during the game as well. Winthrop Coliseum, 4 p.m. Winthrop Ticket Office opens at 12:30 p.m.
