Matt Horn Named Lowe's Senior Class Award Top 10 Finalist

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Senior men's soccer defender Matt Horn has been selected as a Top 10 finalist of the 2011 Lowe's Senior Class Award in men's soccer.

Horn, a senior captain, is looking to become the second ever conference athlete to win the award. Chelsey Kelley of Radford University was named the winner for softball in the spring of 2011.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Horn has earned several honors and academic awards throughout his collegiate career and has headed up several community service projects. He holds a 3.95 grade point average while majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. Some of his academic honors include the president's and dean's list as well as being named the 2010 Big South Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. He is also the president of the Winthrop University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is an NCAA Division I National SAAC Representative for the Big South.

His community work includes a Samaritan's Feet project in 2010 that helped gather over 2,400 pairs of shoes, volunteering for disaster relief in New Orleans in 2008, a student leader mission trip to New York to work with the Interfaith Hospitality in local food pantries, homeless shelters and AIDS awareness and prevention. His hard work along with several other Winthrop student-athletes has helped the Winthrop Athletic Department win the Kallander Cup for the third straight year. The Big South Conference SAAC created the Kallander Cup in 2006-07 to engage student-athletes from all Big South member institutions in a year-long fundraising competition for the benefit of a selected charity.

Horn earned a lot of experience in his field of study with an oncology internship in 2010 with Dr. Steven Limentani at Charlotte Hematology & Oncology and Blumenthal Cancer Research Center in Charlotte, N.C.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men's candidates announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner.

Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winners during the 2011 NCAA Men's College Cup championship, which will take place Dec. 9 and 11 in Hoover, Ala.
