ROCK HILL, S.C. - A new scholarship established by the Senn family of York County will support aspiring elementary school teachers, with a preference to those who have family members who are serving in or have been honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Luellen S. Guyer and MSGT Richard A. Guyer Endowed Scholarship honors Luellen Senn Guyer, Winthrop class of 1963, and her late husband, MSGT Richard A. Guyer, USMC (Ret.). Luellen Senn Guyer taught for more than 20 years in Manassas, Va.; Havelock, N.C.; and York, S.C. The late Richard A. Guyer was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps who died in 1999.
Luellen Senn Guyer’s siblings, Margaret Senn Palmer of Rock Hill, SC; Carolyn Senn Skews of Rock Hill, SC; C.W. Senn, Jr. of York, SC; and W. Edward Senn of Washington, D.C., created this scholarship as a surprise and shared this special surprise with Guyer at a recent family luncheon.
Several generations of the Senn family members have Winthrop connections: Luellen Guyer’s sister-in-law, Christie Byrd Senn ’81, ‘86; nieces, Audrey Skews Culp ’88 and Suzanne Skews ’86; and great niece, Carolyn Quarles ’07.
In 2005, the Senn family also worked to establish the Carolyn Ogilvie Neely Senn Endowed Scholarship, which honors their mother, Carolyn Senn, Winthrop class of 1936. The Carolyn Ogilvie Neely Senn Endowed Scholarship provides scholarships for Winthrop students who are studying to become middle school social studies teachers and who are from York County, S.C. or Newberry County, S.C.
