ROCK HILL, S.C. - The late Mary Sue McElveen’s name – and her legacy – have become a permanent part of Winthrop University’s campus.

Dedicated during a Sept. 16 ceremony, the McElveen Rotunda, located on the third floor of the DiGiorgio Campus Center, honors McElveen ’43 for her longtime support of her alma mater.

McElveen, a 20-year member of Winthrop’s Board of Trustees, was the first woman and Winthrop alumna to serve as board chairperson.

She also served with distinction as a member of the Winthrop Foundation Board and the Winthrop Alumni Association Board. In addition, she was former two-year president of the Alumni Association.

During McElveen’s time at Winthrop, she served as senior class president, as treasurer of the student government and as chair of senior order. She also cofounded and played drums in Winthrop’s first swing band, The Swanks. After graduation, McElveen worked with U.S. Military Intelligence as a cryptographer during World War II and as an American Airlines stewardess.

McElveen was a recipient of Winthrop’s Mary Mildred Sullivan Award in 1983. McElveen and her family members also established the Mary Sue Britton McElveen ’43 and Susie Kortjohn Britton ’17 Scholarship at Winthrop. The endowed scholarship supports students majoring in education with first preference to students from South Carolina’s Pee Dee region.
