Board of Trustees Approves up to $2.6 Million Bond Issue for Building Renovations

The bonds are covered under the university’s existing debt service and will not require additional revenues, fees, or costs to Winthrop.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop Board of Trustees voted unanimously Aug. 22 to issue up to $2.6 million in bonds this fall to pay for needed renovations and maintenance projects on campus.

Normally board members vote in November on any bond issues. However, university officials said they wanted to take advantage of low interest rates and to move quickly on making repairs in some areas. Board members held a quick meeting before participating in Convocation to welcome new students to campus.

Money from sale of the bonds will pay for deferred maintenance and up-fits for Dacus Library, repurposing of Dinkins Hall to house academic tutoring, up-fits to the former Bookworm facility in order to accommodate the Louise Pettus Archives, roof repairs on Byrnes Auditorium, Withers Building and McLaurin Hall and other projects.

The major maintenance projects include:

$650,000 for roof repairs and replacements for McLaurin Hall, Withers Hall and the music conservatory in Byrnes Auditorium, along with other buildings
$900,000 for upgrades to Dacus Library, including equipping it for 24-hour access
$450,000 to upgrade Dinkins Hall - which housed the student activity center before the DiGiorgio Campus Center opened last year - for academic use
$500,000 to enlarge and equip the former Bookworm building, which will house the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections

The bonds are covered under the university’s existing debt service and will not require additional revenues, fees, or costs to Winthrop.
