Creative Loafing Charlotte Names Winthrop Galleries, Fine Arts Best Cultural Institution

Quick Facts

The Department of Fine Arts and Winthrop University Galleries are the newsweekly staff's pick for 2011 Best Cultural Institution.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Department of Fine Arts and Winthrop University Galleries are Creative Loafing Charlotte's 2011 staff pick for Best Cultural Institution.

Staff members of the Charlotte, N.C., newsweekly chose fine arts, chaired by Tom Stanley, and Winthrop Galleries, directed by Karen Derksen, for their "strong programs, leadership and, moreover, a constant involvement in the community that appears natural to the way they work."

"This small department in a state institution at the outskirts exercises an outsized influence on the visual arts culture of this region — something other institutions could learn from and try to emulate," Creative Loafing Charlotte reported in an online post.

For more information about the Galleries, contact Karen Derksen, galleries director, at 803/323-2493 or derksenk@winthrop.edu.
