ROCK HILL, S.C. - A new scholarship at Winthrop University will support first-generation college students, thanks to a gift from Rock Hill resident Linda Knox Warner, Class of 1980.

The Henry Brice Knox and Eunice Hood Knox Scholarship, established in honor of Warner’s parents, will be endowed over a five-year period. First preference will be given to students studying business or special education.

Warner, a first-generation college student, credits her Winthrop experience and her service to the university since graduation for motivating her decision to honor her parents and Winthrop with this gift.

“Winthrop is proud of its first-generation college students and the programs we have, like TRiO, to assist them in their journey to graduation. Thanks to generous support like this, we can continue preparing students for the future,” said Amanda Stewart, director of communications and donor relations.

First-generation college students comprise more than a third of Winthrop’s full-time undergraduate student body, Stewart said.

A certified public accountant with the Bernard N. Ackerman firm, Warner serves as treasurer of the Winthrop Alumni Association and as a member of the Winthrop University Foundation Board.

In addition to her service on many Winthrop-related committees and professional organizations, Warner holds membership in the charter class of the D.B. Johnson Society, which recognizes Winthrop’s planned giving donors.
