Grandson of Winthrop's Founding President Passes Away in Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Burgh Rutledge Johnson, grandson of Winthrop's founding president D.B. Johnson, passed away unexpectedly in Phoenix, Ariz., earlier this month.

Born on September 25, 1927, Burgh Johnson had strong connections to the Winthrop community from the time of his birth. In recent years, he established two scholarships to honor his family’s continuing connection with the Winthrop community, the Burgh Rutledge Johnson Endowment for Masters of Arts in Teaching and the Burgh Kemp Johnson Endowment in Education.

President Anthony DiGiorgio said, "Winthrop extends our deepest sympathy to Burgh’s surviving loved ones."
