York and Lancaster County High Schools Fare Well at Model United Nations Ceremony

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Three area high schools were awarded top honors April 1 at the 35nd annual Model United Nations at Winthrop University.

Held March 30-April 1 in Tillman Hall, the program involved hundreds of students representing more than 30 high schools from North and South Carolina. An awards ceremony Friday afternoon capped two days of deliberations over world events centered on this year’s theme of “35 Years of Debating the World.”

Fort Mill High School whose team represented France, took the Winthrop Cup for best all around high school. Rock Hill High School as Uzbekistan captured the Secretariat Award for contributing the most to the success of the conference. The Geoffrey Bruce Award for the delegation acting most in character of its country went to Indian Land High School of Lancaster County representing Israel.

The Best Resolution Award was given to Colleton Preparatory High School in Walterboro, S.C. for its work on “Request for International Cooperation Aimed at the Liberation of Captives Held by FARC.” The Rookie Award went to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea delegation from the International Relations Association.

Top committee performers in the Legal Committee were: Egypt – Summerville High School, Jay Harness; Australia – Fort Mill High School, Kristy Klixbull; and South Africa – Clover High School, Andrew Harris.

In the Political and Security Committee, recognition was given to: Venezuela – Northwestern High School, Austin J. Hamilton; DPRK - International Relations Association, Lucien Jay; and Angola – Myrtle Beach High School, Henri Liriani

For the Social and Humanitarian Committee, the outstanding representatives were: Uzbekistan – Rock Hill High School, JeBria Wilson; Guinea-Bissau – Fort Mill High School, Madelyn Isner; and China – Nation Ford High School, Jim Abraham

For the Historical Security Council of 1976, major contributors were: France – Fort Mill High School, Andrew Dippre; China – Nation Ford High School, Haley Selby; and Zaire – Rock Hill High School, Lester St. Louis.

The Security Council members recognized for their work were: France - Fort Mill High School Al Lim; Turkey – Westminster Catawba Christian School Matt Coleman; and Kenya – Wando High School Jack Meagher.

For the General Assembly, honored were: Somalia – Rock Hill High School; Iran – Marvin Ridge High School; and Nicaragua – South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics.

Winthrop students who advised the high school students were honored for their guidance: Afghanistan – Christopher Ervin; United States of America – Alexandra Briggs; Russia – Andrew Simpson; Venezuela – Gregory Koehler; Cuba – Leonel Gonzalez; and Norway – Onnie Burkhalter.
