ROCK HILL, S.C. - Four new statues will soon be a part of the scenery at the Winthrop University Athletic Complex. Ike Belk, a well-know Charlotte, N.C., businessman and philanthropist, has commissioned four athletic figures to be created for Winthrop and installed at the Winthrop Athletic Complex during the spring semester.
The figures will depict athletes in four sports – women’s tennis, softball, men’s track and men’s soccer – and each will bear the Winthrop logo. Belk has given athletic figures to other regional schools, including University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Presbyterian College, Furman University and Lenoir-Rhyne University. Winthrop’s collection will be the only group to bear the university’s logo somewhere on each piece.
Belk has previously demonstrated his support by providing funds to support the creation of the track that bears his name, as well as the signature Eagle sculpture on the main campus.
