Winthrop’s DSU Celebrates New Semester with Welcome Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. - As summer winds down, Winthrop’s DiGiorgio Student Union is gearing up for fall 2010 with eight days of ultimate icebreakers, concerts, slam poetry, hypnotism and more.

Welcome Week, which begins on Friday, Aug. 20, will boast a busy lineup of acts Aug. 20-23 and Aug. 26-29:

• Friday, Aug. 20 – Winthrop faculty, staff and students can break the ice at Playfair, “the ultimate icebreaker,” at 8 p.m. at the West Center.
• Saturday, Aug. 21 – Miami-based Latin hip-hop band City of God will perform at 8 p.m. in Byrnes Auditorium. Special guest will be Buzz Sutherland, 16-time College Comedian of the Year.
• Sunday, Aug. 22 Who’s Bad?, the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band, will revive the late King of Pop’s biggest hits at 8 p.m. in Byrnes Auditorium.
• Monday, Aug. 23 – Indie singer/songwriters Jenn Grinels and Rebecca Loebe will fill the Margaret Nance Hall front lawn with the sounds of folk music at 5 p.m. during the Convocation picnic. (Rain location is the West Center.)
• Thursday, Aug. 26 – Fall under the spell of hypnotist Tom DeLuca, a longtime Winthrop campus tradition, at 8 p.m. in Byrnes Auditorium.
• Friday, Aug. 27 – Slam poet Colin Gilbert and the Ghana, West Africa-rooted musical duo Sam and Ruby will perform at 8 p.m. in Byrnes Auditorium.
• Saturday, Aug. 28 – Seen on “America’s Got Talent,” Recycled Percussion will bring their power percussion/junk rock stylings to Byrnes Auditorium at 8 p.m.
• Sunday, Aug. 29 – Relive the age of Motown with recording artist/rock show Safety Suit, set to play at 7 p.m. in Byrnes Auditorium.

Formerly known as the Dinkins Student Union, the programming board took on the new name this summer as it changed location to the new DiGiorgio Campus Center.

Welcome Week passes (good for DSU events August 20-29) are $10 with Winthrop I.D. and $20 for the public. General admission is $5 with Winthrop I.D. and $10 for the public.
