ROCK HILL, S.C. - Carlos E. Evans, EVP and executive director of the wholesale segment for Wachovia Corp., was recently elected as president of the Winthrop University Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Evans has worked more than 30 years in financial services in the Carolinas. A native of Florence, S.C., he earned a bachelor of science degree in economics from Newberry College. He also graduated from the Commercial Lending School in Norman, Okla.., and the Colgate Darden Commercial Lending School at the University of Virginia.
Other Winthrop Foundation officers elected during the Feb. 8 meeting were: Irvin V. Plowden Sr., vice president; and Gerald E. Schapiro, secretary/treasurer.
The mission of the foundation, which administers an endowment of $26 million, is to coordinate and fund critical needs of the university, including scholarships, alumni programming and faculty commencement awards. Winthrop is a comprehensive teaching university of 6,500 graduate and undergraduate students. It was listed in Consumers Digest as among the nation’s top 50 "Best Value" public universities for 2004 and appeared in U.S. News & World Report’s Top Ten Regional Public Universities in the magazine’s "America’s Best Colleges" 2005 edition.
