ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop University’s Symphonic Band will present a "Concert on the Lawn" on Sept. 25 in front of Byrnes Auditorium.
This is an outdoor program of compositions for the wind band and is intended to be reminiscent of the community and professional band concerts of the early 1900s. The concert starts at 6 p.m.
Symphonic band members will play a mixture of marches, patriotic pieces and other selections. The music performed will include marches by Karl King, Arthur Pryor and John Williams and the patriotic music of Samuel Ward. Winthrop faculty members Jerry Helton, Michael Hough and Ian Pearson will be featured soloists.
Conductor Lorrie Crochet, instructor in music and assistant director of bands, hopes that the concert will bring Winthrop and the surrounding communities together. "The music has been selected to appeal to all audience members regardless of age or knowledge of wind band music," she said.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Department of Music at 803/323-2255.
