''Time of Thanksgiving'' Speech to Be Given by Winthrop President

YORK, S.C. - The Citizens Awareness Group of York, S.C., will sponsor its second annual gratitude gala on Nov. 12. The event, to be held at 7 p.m. at York’s McCelvey Center, will be called "A Time of Thanksgiving" and will feature an address by Winthrop University President Anthony J. DiGiorgio.

Now in his 17th year as president of Winthrop, DiGiorgio is the longest-serving president of any public university in South Carolina. Winthrop is regularly rated among the top public institutions of its kind in the South, winning accolades for academic excellence, character development, commitment to diversity, student programming, sound fiscal management and environmental achievements.

The Citizens Awareness Group is a community organization which was formed two years ago to promote dialogue among the citizens of Western York County. Mistress of Ceremonies on Nov. 12 will be McCelvey Director Mary Lynn Norton. DiGiorgio will be introduced by York Mayor and Winthrop history professor Eddie Lee. Another Winthrop employee, William Haynes, is a member of the citizens group.

Music will be provided by Pat and Jim Hodnett of York, Sonya Currance of Gastonia, David Currence of Clover, Michael Wright of York, and Janice Davidson and George Taylor of Charlotte.York Comprehensive High School's Teacher Cadets will serve as ushers.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and are available from McCelvey Center, Ruth Wright Johnson in York, William Haynes in Clover, S.C., Wright Funeral Home in York and Winthrop's Office of University Relations.
