Winthrop Named to Honor Roll with Distinction

Quick Facts

This is the fourth straight year that the university has received the recognition.
This year marks the first time that Winthrop was honored with Distinction, and it is one of only three higher education institutions in South Carolina to receive the designation.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop has been named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

This is the fourth straight year that the university has received the recognition; however, this year marks the first time that Winthrop was honored with Distinction. Only three higher education institutions in South Carolina received the Distinction designation — Winthrop, Wofford College and Horry-Georgetown Technical College.

The Corporation for National and Community Service administers the annual Honor Roll award.

Winthrop was honored for its numerous civic engagement and service-learning efforts. Winthrop projects included a hunger banquet, an event focused on global poverty; Goodbye Minimally Adequate, a program organized by SOAR (Serving Others and Reflecting) that focused on both the “Corridor of Shame” and the Goodbye Minimally Adequate campaign to change the wording of the state constitution; and Success Skills, a program at Northwestern High School by Winthrop’s SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) organization. The Success Skills class was developed to provide success skills and financial literacy activities to 75 juniors and seniors who were identified as being at-risk for not completing high school.

The Honor Roll includes six colleges and universities that are recognized as Presidential Awardees, with an additional 115 named to the Distinction List and 621 schools named as Honor Roll members.
