ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Winthrop Eagles defeated top-seeded Coastal Carolina 64-53 on March 6 to win the Big South Conference Championship, receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The men’s basketball team will find out who and where they play in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 14 during Selection Sunday. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum in time to watch the CBS Selection Show at 6 p.m.
For the ninth time in 12 seasons, the Eagles are Big South Conference champions. With the win Winthrop (19-13) earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Eagles senior Mantoris Robinson played a strong defensive game, holding Coastal Carolina's leading scorer Joseph Harris to three points and one field goal that came in the final 22 seconds of the game. Coming into the game, Harris averaged 15 points per game. Robinson also scored 14 points and scored five of the Eagle points from the free throw line.
