Department of Modern Languages

Mission Statement

The department of Modern Languages at Winthrop University is at the forefront in the field of foreign languages because of the strength of the programs, its long history of providing excellent instruction, and its highly qualified faculty.  The Department offers a B.A. in Modern Languages with a concentration in either French or Spanish, and minors in these two languages as well as German.  It also offers Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Latin.

The Department offers the M.A. in Spanish as well.  The program consists of 30 semester hours with a thesis option and includes five core courses in Hispanic Civilization, Advanced Phonetics, Advanced Conversation, Advanced Grammar and Composition, and Masterpieces of Spanish or Spanish- American Literature.  Those who successfully complete the graduate program will demonstrate an enhanced knowledge of the Spanish language, and a deeper appreciation of Hispanic civilization, culture and literature.  Each of the five courses addresses a specific skill or area that the recipient of the Master's degree will need in order to be a better language teacher or a graduate student qualified to continue towards further study.

Whether students major or minor in a specific language or choose to pursue enough language study to achieve a certain degree of fluency, all of them gain a deeper appreciation of the many cultures that speak, write, read, and think in languages other than English.  In the course of reaching a better understanding of other cultures, they will also come to have a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for their own.
