Request Forms Required for International Students
International students should use the forms below to report important information or request various items from the International Center.
Local Address Update
International students are required to notify the International Center within 10 days of changing their local address. If students do not notify the International Center in a timely manner they are violating their F/J visa status. Updating an address during SEVIS registration is required but not enough to maintain compliance with this USCIS regulation.
Please complete the Local Address Update Form within 10 days of changing your local address.
Letter Request Form
The International Student Letter Request Form is used for several reasons:
- To request a letter that will be shown to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when applying for a drivers license. The DMV requires a recent letter from the International Center verifying the international students visa status and local address to allow the student to apply for a drivers license.
- To request a letter that will be provided to the Social Security Administration (SSA) when a student is applying for a social security card. Students can request a SSA letter when they have secured a job on-campus at Winthrop University that will pay them a wage. The hiring department must provide the student a "job offer letter" which the student will bring to the International Center to verify employment before receiving the SSA letter.
- To request a letter of invitation for graduating students families to travel to Winthrop to attend their family members commencement ceremony.
The International Center reserves the right to take up to 2 business days to complete any requested letters. If a letter is completed early the student will receive an email letting them know the letter is ready to pick up. If for some reason it will take longer to produce the letter the student will be notified via email.
Program Extension Request Form
If a student will need more time to complete their degree program than originally stated on their form I-20 or DS-2019, the student must complete the Form to request an extension of the end date of your Form I-20 providing the information required on the form. The student's academic advisor must complete the Academic Advisor Recommendation Form. Both forms and any additional materials must be submitted to the International Center at least 30 days prior to the expiration date of a student's current I-20 form. The I-20 cannot be extended if the document has expired. If the I-20 has expired the student is in violation of their F1 visa status.
Form to Request a Reduced Course Load
All international students are required to be enrolled full-time each fall and spring semester they attend Winthrop University, except for their final semester. USCIS has very strict regulations pertaining to a student being enrolled less than full-time. If a student has a medical reason to request being enrolled less than full-time, etc. they must complete the Form to Request Taking a Reduced Course Load and submit the required application to the International Center. The International Center will review the application and make a decision on whether or not to approve the request for a reduced course load. Students must not drop any courses below the required full-time enrollment before receiving a decision from the International Center.
SEVIS Record Update Form
USCIS requires that all information listed on a students I-20 and DS-2019 be accurate at all times. Students have 10 days to notify the International Center of any change to the information in their SEVIS record. To update this information students must complete the SEVIS Record Update Form and submit the form to the International Center in a timely manner. Any change to a students major, program completion date, local address, permanent home address, etc. must be reported to the International Center. USCIS mandates that all this information be kept accurate to avoid students violating their F/J visa status.
