Costs

In order to receive a Form I-20 from Winthrop University, a student must show access to funds for one academic year.  All schools are required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to make a reasonable estimate of all expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, housing and meals, health insurance, and miscellaneous expenditures (clothing, local travel, recreation, etc.)  Winthrop reviews the estimated cost for an international student to attend Winthrop on an annual basis.

A person may show adequate funding from any dependable source including scholarships, sponsoring agencies, personal funds or funds from the applicants family.  A Statement of Financial Responsibility and an Affidavit of Support are available on page three of the International Undergraduate Application for admission.

The approximate cost of the 2009-2010 academic year (two semesters) of undergraduate study at Winthrop University is $31,057. This cost is for Fall and Spring semesters, roughly from late August until early May.   Some students will continue their studies in the summer, which would result in additional costs.  If your family accompanies you, an additional $5,000 per dependent will be necessary.

All students holding an F or J visa are required to pay the out-of-state tuition and fees.  The state of South Carolina determines the residency laws all public institutions of higher education in South Carolina.  South Carolina has developed a list of approved visa classifications for in-state tuition rate.  Please review this list of visa types and also review information about residency applications and frequently asked questions.

Also note, any person receiving approval for permanent residency status must wait one year (12 months) from the date of USCIS approval to be eligible to pay in-state tuition rates at any South Carolina state supported college or university.  Permanent Residency status and tuition rates have been the source of confusion for some Winthrop University applicants.  For more information on residency requirements and the South Carolina Residency Policy contact our Residency Officer
