Transfer Students

Many students elect to begin their studies at another college or university and transfer to Winthrop University to earn an undergraduate degree.  The International Center will process transfer applications for the fall and spring semesters.

Applicants who have taken college-level course work in a degree-seeking status in the fall or spring semester after high school graduation are classified as transfer students when submitting an application to Winthrop University, regardless of whether the course(s) will transfer for credit.

Transfer applicants must have official transcripts of all college coursework (part- or full-time, attempted or completed) from every institution attended (whether or not credit was earned or desired) sent directly from the registrar of each institution to the International Center of Winthrop University.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for students transferring to Winthrop University from other colleges/universities.  In order to qualify for a transfer scholarship a student must -

  • The minimum criteria is a 3.5 cumulative GPA completed on 30 or more hours (excluding remedial or developmental courses).
  • Students with a previously earned bachelor's degree or who are classified as a readmit are not eligible.
  • Students who apply for admission will be automatically evaluated for scholarship eligibility during the admission process.   Transfer scholarships are considered only after the final college transcript has been received by the International Center.
  • All awards are renewable based on the quidelines set forth by the Scholarship Committee.

Transferring from a US College or University

  • All transfer applicants must e eligible to return to the last post-secondary school attended.
  • Transfer applicants must have official copies of all college course work (part or full time, attempted or completed) from every institution attended (whether credit was earned or attempted) sent directly to the International Center. 
  • Transfer applicants who have earned fewer than 30 semester hours must submit a high school transcript along with standardized test scores. 
  • Transfer applicants who have attempted 13 semester (19.5 quarter) or more hours (excluding courses designated as remedial or developmental) of course work from a regionally accredited institution must present a cumulative grade point ratio of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must also earn a 2.0 GPR for the last term of attendance.
  • Transfer applicants who have attempted 12 semester (18 quarter) or fewer hours (excluding courses designated as remedial or development) must present a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicants who have attempted few than 12 hours of college course work will be evaluated on their college performance and high school GPA, including grades, and SAT or ACT scores.Emphasis will be placed on grades earned in college courses.

International transfer students enrolled at an American college/university must submit a Transfer Verification Form in addition to the other required credentials to apply to transfer to Winthrop University. A copy of the student's I-20 must be attached to the Transfer Verification Form.

Transferring from a Foreign Institution

If you are a transfer student from a foreign institution, complete course descriptions or syllabi of all courses you have taken must be provided to allow evaluation for transfer of credit.  Your academic advisor will award transfer credit based on your course descriptions and syllabi. Courses not offered at Winthrop University or grades received below a "C" will not be awarded course credit.

Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policy

Winthrop University, in general, accepts transfer course credit from other institutions of higher education under the following conditions:

  • The course work must have been taken at an institution that is an accredited college or university.
  • The subject matter and the level of the course must be appropriate to Winthrop's general education curriculum or the program into which the student is transferring.
  • The grade that is received for the course must be at least C- or a grade with a minimum level equivalent to a C-.

In general, credit is not granted for transfer for vocational, remedial, or developmental courses unless the forwarding college granted credit and Winthrop offers essentially the same course for credit. 

Transferring students who have completed course work in general studies programs are permitted to transfer only 15 hours of selected courses from such programs into any curriculum at Winthrop.  The selection of the courses and the applicability to the curriculum is determined by the academic divisin receiving the student.

The individual college at Winthrop makes the final determination of the applicability of the accepted credit to the student's degree program.
