Saturday, November 14 - Winthrop University Homecoming Celebration!
All International Students are invited to "tailgate" in the Winthrop Coliseum parking lot at 2 p.m. prior to the Men's Basketball game that begins at 4 p.m.! Make sure to bring your student ID for admission to the game at 4 p.m. Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we can plan snacks accordingly. Reserve your spot by contacting the International Center.

This year marks the tenth annual International Education Week (IEW), sponsored by the U.S. Departments of State and Education. The goal of IEW is to showcase how international education advances learning, builds understanding and respect among different peoples, and enhances constructive leadership in the global community.
South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford signed the Governor's Proclamation that November 16 - 20, 2009 is recognized by South Carolina as International Education Week across our great state.

Sunday, November 15th-Saturday, November 21st
Sunday, November 15 - “Sleep Out” and Homeless Vigil, Box City set up at 3:00 p.m.; Vigil begins at 8:30 p.m. on the Dinkins Lawn. The Sleep Out goes throughout the night. Sponsored by the Wesley Foundation & Center for Career and Civic Engagement.
Monday, November 16 - IEW Brown Bag Lunch for Faculty and Staff: Moving Beyond Stereotypes in the Classroom from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the International Center, 206 Tillman Hall.
Lindsey Hill and the International Center staff will speak about international students at Winthrop, the challenges they face, the challenges we face and the overall good they bring to Winthrop University.
Monday, November 16 - Global Food Insecurity: Sustainability and the Next Food Revolution, 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Carroll Hall, Whitton Auditorium. *Approved Cultural Event.
Our kickoff presentation for International Education Week will be presented by Dr. Greg Pillar, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Chemistry at Queens University. He will explore the connected causes and affects of food insecurity including the efforts being made to secure the physical and economic access to food for countries needing it the most.
This event is free, but please bring a canned food item for entry into the lecture. All items collected will be donated to a local care center. The food drive is co-sponsored by the Center for Career and Civic Engagement, the Winthrop Culture Club, and the International Center.
Tuesday, November 17 - International Expo, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Walkway in front of Byrnes Auditorium.
The Expo will showcase the different countries represented on campus, highlighting items of interest including, but not limited to, art, literature, music, entertainment and native food and dress. Presented by Winthrop’s Culture Club, Ambassadors and International Students.
Tuesday, November 17 - Economics from a Global Perspective, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in Carroll Hall, Whitton Auditorium. *Approved Cultural Event.
This lecture presented by Dr. Laura Ullrich, assistant professor of Economics in the College of Business will discuss global economics and the interdependence of the world's nations. She will be joined by a panel of international students to discuss how the current economic situation is being felt around the world.
Wednesday, November 18 - IEW Brown Bag Lunch Event: The Great Depression a Global Event, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the Dinkins Underground Cafe. *Approved Cultural Event .
Many of us are aware of what life was like in the United States during the Great Depression. Dr. Gary Stone, Professor of Economics at Winthrop University will look beyond our borders to talk about the Great Depression's effects around the world.
Thursday, November 19 - International Food Festival in Thomson Cafe, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Thomson will serve dishes from around the world based on recipes submitted by Winthrop's international students during the lunch hour. Stop by and take a quick trip around the world.
Thursday, November 19 - IEW Movie: MALLS R US, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. in Kinard Auditorium. *Approved Cultural Event.
MALLS R US presented and discussed by Dr. Jeannie Haubert Weil, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Winthrop. The film discusses the psychological appeal of malls to consumers, how architects design their environments to combine consumerism with nature and spectacle, and how mall developments are transforming how people live and shop around the world. MALLS R US offers a trip to the mall like no other, showing how the social dynamism they represent can be a destructive force, one that confuses the good life with the world of goods.
Friday, November 20 - IEW Brown Bag Lunch Event: Travel on a Shoestring Budget, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the Dinkins Underground Cafe. Angie Edwards and Meghan Randinelli will be on hand with information and advice on how to travel abroad on a Ramen noodle budget. Study abroad alumni will also share their helpful tips for future world travelers.
Saturday, November 21 - Florez with VINX sponsored by DSU, 8:00 – 10:30 p.m., $5 with WU ID, $10 for public in the Dinkins Underground. *Approved Cultural Event
Florez is a bluesy guitar groove drive trio that is one of the best bands in the Southeast. Their music includes singing in both English and Spanish, giving a beat that’s sure to make you dance. Joined by special guest, percussionist, Vinx, an internationally acclaimed musician who has toured with Sting, Herbie Hancock, Taj Mahal, Brandford Marrali, Sheryl Crow, and Stewart Copeland.
