The Master of Arts in Teaching One-Year Option (MAT5)

This full-time degree program allows students to earn a Master's degree and teaching certification in one year (three semesters). This accelerated MAT program (also called MAT5) is designed for, and open to, students who completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college of university within one year of starting the MAT one year option program.

Application Deadline: February 15 for summer admission. This program only admits students one time per year, in the summer.

Graduates of this program will meet South Carolina course requirements for certification as a teacher in one of the following certification areas:

art
biology
chemistry
English
French
math
social studies
Spanish.

*Applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements are welcome to apply to our traditional Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Financial Assistance

Scholarships and Graduate Assistantships are available to fully-admitted graduate students.  In addition, a special grant-funded scholarship and stipend program is available to those pursuing Math or Biology teacher certification. The WISE program (Winthrop Initiative for STEM Educators) will provide $10,000 scholarships and stipends to eligible MAT students who agree to teach in high-need schools upon graduation.
