 TEACH Grant - Requirements
 

Under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress established legislation to offer additional grant funds to students pursuing an undergraduate, graduate or certification in an eligible education program.

Winthrop University students will need to meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the TEACH Grant:

8 Complete the FAFSA
§ Be enrolled in an eligible major as determined by the Federal regulations for TEACH 
        Grant or an approved high need shortage area approved by the Secretary of the US
        Department of Education. See attached link for the National Shortage List:

Winthrop University offers the following majors that are eligible for the TEACH Grant:

BIOL Biology CHEM Chemistry
CHOR Choral Music COND Conducting
DANC Dance EART Art Education
EMUS Music Education ENGL English
INST Instrumental Music MATH Mathematics
MLED Middle Level Education MUED Music Education

SEND Secondary English SMAT Secondary Mathematics

New Freshman:
 

High School GPA of 3.25 or greater on the Uniform Grading Scale.  If your GPA is below 3.25 then you must provide your test scores from the SAT or ACT. Your test scores must be in the 75th percentile of the national test scores to qualify for the TEACH Grant.

A student must self report this info.   Winthrop University Admissions office records your scores but they do not receive the percentile for your scores.

You may receive your SAT scores through College Board, www.collegeboard.com. If you have not activated this account or used it within the past year, your scores may have been archived.   In this occurrence, please contact College Board directly to receive your scores.  Please call toll free 1-866-756-7346

You may receive your ACT scores by logging on to http://www.actstudent.org/index.html.  If your scores have been archived, then you can receive them by phone or online.                    

Please be advised charges may apply to receive archived SAT/ACT scores.  Before paying for your scores, you may want to check with your high school to see if they have kept those records.

 

Continuing Students
 

Maintain Winthrop GPA of 3.25

                 OR

Rank in the 75th percentile of national testing scores.  See section above for more information on how to receive your test scores.
 

Graduate Students
 

Maintain Winthrop GPA of 3.25

                    OR

Rank in the 75th percentile of national testing score.

 

? Sign the Agreement to Serve. 
  Log on to www.teach-ats.ed.gov to complete this document.  This must be completed before the funds can be disbursed to your account.
 
 Complete Entrance Counseling.
  Log on to www.mappingyourfuture.org.  This must be completed before the funds can be disbursed to your account. Please note, you will need to complete counseling before each academic year and exit counseling when you graduate or leave an eligible program. 

If you receive the TEACH Grant and do not complete your service, this will revert to an UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN with interest accruing from the date of disbursement.
