Faculty Recruitment

Message from the Academic Vice President

Tom Moore profile shot My highest priority for the Winthrop faculty is to enable the institution to become the best public comprehensive university in the southeast and among the best in the nation. In recent years, we have directed considerable effort toward strengthening the curriculum with a new general education program and an increased emphasis on the academic and co-curricular experiences of freshmen. These efforts are intended to engage our entering students and produce expectations in them that all their Winthrop experiences will be meaningful, challenging, and enriching.

Winthrop is seeking faculty who want student learning and development to be their primary professional responsibility and who would like to be part of a community committed to learning as our central activity, with student learning at its heart. In order to engage students in learning, faculty must be active, engaged learners themselves, and we expect faculty to develop and demonstrate their learning through productive scholarship, which often involves participation of student co-investigators. While disciplinary studies remain the dominant type of scholarship for Winthrop faculty, we encourage efforts that cross discipline boundaries and approach issues from multiple perspectives.

Being a Winthrop faculty member presents opportunities to participate in university life through varied service activities. Service is central to our mission, and we expect everyone in the Winthrop community to contribute to making the university and the larger community better for their being here.

As you consider becoming a faculty member here, I encourage you to get as much information as possible about us. I am convinced that for faculty who want teaching to be the center of their professional life, the more you learn about Winthrop, the more likely you are to want to join our community. Thank you for your consideration.
