Inclement Weather Closing InformationPoster for Shakespeare's The Tempest

If there is bad weather, the University will post information about possible closings or delayed openings on its website, www.winthrop.edu and by a campus-wide e-mail to your campus e-mail accounts. Please check these for official information and don't be swayed by rumors. The campus emergency information website is www.winthrop.edu/emergency; we suggest  you bookmark this page!

The University will also provide official information to local radio and television stations. These are:

Radio: WRHI-AM (1340), WRHM-FM (107), WFAE-FM ( 90.7), WPEG-FM (98.0),
WRFX-FM (99.7), STAR-FM (104.7), LINK-FM (107.9)

Television: WCBL-TV (CN2), WBTV (3), WSOC-TV (9), NBC 6 (36), Fox 18

If the university is open, individual instructors will make the decision about whether to hold class. Call your instructor's voice mail, since most instructors will leave a message there for students. (You can find this number on your syllabus, the "faculty" page or on the main Winthrop Faculty Directory.) Some instructors will also place a bad weather policy on their syllabi. Please do not call the English Department office; the administrative assistant and work study students will not know for sure if your particular class is meeting!

We recommend that all faculty, staff, and students register their phones with the campus ALERT-US system. (You can register both cell phones and land lines with this system.) This will send you automatic phone messages in case of an emergency. You can register by going to https://asap.winthrop.edu/cellphone/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fcellphone%2fDefault.aspx&s=0. Please don't call Campus Police for this information; they have enough on their hands during bad weather.

Winthrop's official guidelines for weather safety are listed at http://www.winthrop.edu/facilitymgmt/Safety/safety.htm. You can check the official forecasts for Rock Hill at the Winthrop Weather Station (http://www.winthrop.edu/weather) or the National Weather Service site: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=Rock+Hill&state=SC&site=GSP

Please use your best judgment about coming to class if the weather or driving conditions are dangerous. Notify your instructor by voice mail or e-mail if you will not be able to attend classes. You can get a rough idea of conditions on campus by checking the Bancroft web cam: http://www.winthrop.edu/visitor/webcam.htm and check highway conditions thru the SC Dept. of Transportation webcams at http://www.dot.state.sc.us/getting/cams/RockHillCam.asp.

If you are walking, driving, or parking on campus, please be careful--and look above you as well as in front of you. We have a lot of old trees--and that means falling limbs. And our sidewalks tend to get very slippery, so watch your step! We know your minds are lost in lofty thoughts of literature and language, but please try to practice a little defensive walking and driving in bad conditions.
