Bachelor of Science in Science Communication
The
Bachelor of Science in Science Communication at Winthrop is a degree program unique in
the Southeast. Started in 1985, the program develops a wide range of communication skills
and teaches students to apply these skills in scientific and technical fields. This
degree is designed to prepare students who are interested in
science but don’t
want to pursue a traditional scientific career (such as medical school or a
scientific Ph.D.) for careers involving writing and reporting on scientific and
technical subjects for the popular press and in-house industry publications.
Students are trained to write materials including technical reports, user
manuals, software documentation, technical descriptions, web pages, and
explanations and similar materials for business and industry. They also receive
training in the use of photographic equipment, in visual media, and in computer
word processing. These
communications skills are complemented with a strong science and technology component.
Students in this program complete an internship at a field site
in the Metrolina area (or beyond) and often gain employment resulting from the
internship. The program is comprehensive, and curriculum demands are
considerable. Science Communication should appeal to more capable students. It
is a highly competitive field in which motivated,
bright students are likely to
succeed.
