Department Hosts 2009 SEASECS Meeting |
The
Winthrop English Department will host the next
Southeastern
American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies
(SEASECS)
Conference, March 5-7, 2009. Held in the middle of the
second largest banking center in the United States, next
year’s conference will naturally explore all subjects
related to the interrelationship between artistic, cultural,
economic, and commercial progressions (and regressions)
during the long eighteenth century.
Dr. Jack DeRochi is the conference organizer.
The conference will also welcome
topics that seek to unveil the various alterations or
“tricks” within specific literary genres or modes of
entertainment during the same period. Of course, this theme
is only a suggestion, and we cordially invite papers and
panels that address all types of subject areas, including
art, drama, printing, music, history, religion, race, and
gender, etc. The submission deadline for all session
proposals is
September 1,
2008.
The submission deadline for all
paper proposals is
November 1,
2008.
Please send your brief abstract to program chair Dr. Dan
Ennis at
dennis@coastal.edu. Snail mail submissions may be
sent to Dr. Dan Ennis, Department of English, Coastal
Carolina University, Conway, SC, 29528. Be sure to include
your contact information.
Plenaries
will include a presentation by Pat Rogers as well as a
Baroque music and dance performance by Barry Bauguess, John
O’Brien, and Paige Whitley-Bauguess (for more information on
this performance, please visit
www.baroquedance.com).
Conference accommodations will be at The Renaissance
Southpark Hotel, only ten minutes from the airport, and
right in the heart of the
Southpark area of Charlotte.
The
youngest “Queen City” brags a vibrant city life, with
wonderful museums like The Mint Museum of Art, The Mint
Museum of Craft and Design, and the Museum of the New South.
SEASECS attendees may also enjoy nearby Historic
Brattonsville, the James K. Polk Historical Site, or the
Latta Plantation. They may also like to visit the Blumenthal
Performing Arts Center, the Afro American Cultural Center,
or the newest thriving arts and cultural district of NoDa for
great music, great food, and independent galleries. Finally,
for those inclined, The Renaissance Hotel places you right
next to great shopping: Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom’s are
just a couple of the new additions to South Park Mall, but
one mustn’t miss Phillip’s Place or The Specialty Shops,
literally a couple of blocks away.

information on SEASECS or the conference, see the
SEASECS home page.
